Roa Named SEC Pitcher of the Week
Mar 18, 2019 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore Christian Roa was named the SEC Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The Aggie right-hander stymied No. 2 Vanderbilt in the rubber match of the series with his longest career outing. The Commodores entered the contest leading the SEC in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and runs per game, but Roa constricted Vandy to three hits and two walks in 7.0 scoreless innings. He only allowed a runner into scoring position in one inning and struck out seven. He finished strong with just 13 pitches in a 1-2-3 seventh inning before handing the ball to the bullpen with a 7-0 lead.
Roa is 2-1 with one save and a 2.29 ERA in eight appearances, including two starts, in 2019. The Houston product is holding opponents to a .200 batting average and has 21 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.
For his career, the northpaw has appeared in 22 contests. Roa is 2-1 with one save, a 3.15 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. He was 0-0 with a 4.30 ERA and 12 strikeouts over 14.2 innings as a freshman.
It marked the second time an Aggie has earned SEC Pitcher of the Week in 2019 with John Doxakis taking home the honor following the opening weekend of the season. A Texas A&M player has earned SEC Pitcher of the Week eight times since the Aggies joined the conference for the 2013 campaign.
