Apr 19, 2019 | Track and Field
WACO – Aggie alum Maggie Malone won the javelin at the Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor with a throw of 182 feet, 7 inches (55.67) in her first competition since May of 2017.
Texas A&M's Celine Markert led the three Aggies competing in the women's javelin with a third-place effort of 159-4 (47.62). She was followed by Jenna Ellis (145-6) in sixth place while Natalie Scheifele (134-1) finished ninth.
"I had a stinger today while warming up, so I didn't think I was going to throw," said Malone, the 2016 NCAA and USATF javelin champion as well as collegiate record holder. "But I wanted to get all six throws in to get a meet under my belt. Now it's time to put the work in. Still, my goal is 2020.
"It's been weird getting back into throwing since I'm working now. It's finding a new rhythm and balance for all that. It's been hard and different, but I have an awesome support system and friends. I'm excited for the season."
Malone's series included an opening throw of 167-7 (51.09) followed by three fouls. Then she hit her best mark of the day in round five and finished with a 171-4 (52.24). Runner-up to Malone was a throw of 160-2 (48.81) by Ashtin Zamzow, a heptathlete from Texas.
KJ Grimes placed fifth in the men's hammer with a career best throw of 183-7 (55.97), moving to No. 6 on the Aggie all-time list. Grimes, who had a previous career best of 174-0 (53.03), opened with a toss of 179-6 (54.71) and improved to 183-7 in the final round. Josh Brown improved his best by 10 inches with a mark of 170-11 (52.11) to place 11th.
Finishing third in the open pole vault, Logan Freeman cleared a height of 16-0 ¾ (4.90) to improve upon his outdoor best of 15-7 set at UTSA in March. Devin Norton clocked a time of 18:06.33 for sixth place in the 5,000m. Decathlete Nathan Hite placed seventh in the javelin with a mark of 173-11 (52.02).
A full day of action continues Saturday during the second day of the Michael Johnson Invitational.
