POSITION PREVIEW: Goalkeepers
Aug 14, 2019 | Soccer
'Tons of talent, needs seasoning.'… That is the best way to describe Texas A&M's goalkeeping corps.
The biggest question mark for the Aggies entering the 2019 campaign is between the woodwork. The Maroon & White have four talented players on the roster, but none have played a minute of goal in a collegiate match that counts.
The Aggies must replace goalkeeper Cosette Morché who played every minute in goal the last two seasons, registering 35 victories and 20 shutouts.
Texas A&M welcomes back Olivia Ausmus and Jordan Burbank as well as adding freshmen Kenna Caldwell and Shantel Hutton to the mix.
Coach G's Take – "Our goalkeepers are a very tight-knit corps. They work very hard for each other in training. They have a very good attitude of helping each other to get better every single day. All four of them are individually terrific athletes and very good shot stoppers. I feel confident with any of the four playing in goal."
OLIVIA AUSMUS
Ausmus has fought through injury since arriving on campus in 2017. Returning to full health this summer, the redshirt sophomore is looking to make her Aggie debut in 2019. A prized prep player, Ausmus was selected to participate at the United States U-18 Women's National Team training camp and she was awarded District 15-6A Goalkeeper MVP and All-District 15-6A First Team honors in 2015. She was a member of Challenge SC for eight years, including five years as a captain.
Coach G's Take – "Olivia came in to Texas A&M as one of the most celebrated young goalkeepers in the country with youth national team experience. She experienced a couple injuries at the end of her high school career and the start of her college career, but she's recovered from those. She has tremendous leadership abilities, and she's a very good leader of our backline. Olivia has a great understanding of the game and how to be successful."
JORDAN BURBANK
Burbank didn't see game action her first fall in Aggieland. The redshirt freshman was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Edmond (Okla.) North High School where she notched a 37-14-1 record, including 27 shutouts. Burbank earned VYPE All-OKC, the Oklahoman All-City and All-Metro Athletics Conference as a junior as she led the Huskies to a conference title and district championship along with a No. 2 state ranking and No. 20 national ranking.
Coach G's Take – "Jordan is a very hardworking goalkeeper. She has a tremendous work ethic and is a great shot stopper. She has done outstandingly well for us in the spring games that she's played in, and we're looking for her to be a leader for us, on and off the field, this season."
KENNA CALDWELL
Caldwell arrives at Texas A&M as one of the top goalkeepers in Colorado. A three-year letterwinner at Rock Canyon High School, she garnered All-Colorado recognition following her junior season as she led the Jaguars to a 16-3 record and a state semifinal appearance. She honed her talents with Colorado Rush at the US Soccer Developmental Academy.
Coach G's Take – "Kenna is a very good young goalkeeper. Her distribution, especially in the feet, is excellent. Her consistency over the past couple years developing through the Rush system in Colorado has really benefited her."
SHANTEL HUTTON
Hutton comes to Aggieland as one of the top goalkeepers in Georgia. A three-year-letterwinner at Greater Atlanta Christian School, she guided the Spartans to Class AAA state semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2017 and the Sweet 16 in 2018. The 2018 campaign ended with Region 7-AAA Player of the Year recognition as well as All-Region 7-AAA First Team and All-Gwinnett County. She played club soccer for Concorde Fire ECNL.
Coach G's Take – "Shantel is a very athletic and talented freshman goalkeeper. She comes in with a solid background as both a field player and a goalkeeper. She's someone who has shown a great deal of improvement since coming in as an early enrollee at Texas A&M this past January. Shantel is very gifted in her quickness and her confidence with her feet."
