Texas A&M Falls to No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 1 UCLA at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic
Feb 21, 2020 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Texas A&M softball team went up against two top-five ranked opponents on day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday. The Aggies fell to No. 3 Oklahoma, 2-1 and then battled against the No. 1 team in the nation UCLA, falling 9-1 in six innings.
The Aggies drop to 10-5 overall with Oklahoma improving to 10-1 and UCLA remaining undefeated with a 12-0 mark.
Texas A&M came up just short of knocking off No. 3 Oklahoma in its first game of the day. Senior Kendall Potts was terrific in the circle for the Aggies, allowing just one run in the first inning and a walk off hit in the seventh. Oklahoma was able to get runners on base and in scoring position throughout the game, but Potts and the Aggie defense shut down the Sooners.
In the top of the seventh inning, Payton McBride gave the Aggies some momentum with a single to left center and Taudrea Sinnie pinch ran for McBride to put some speed on the bases. Pinch-hitting for Kayla Garcia, Meagan Smith would provide the hit to push the Aggies forward. With two strikes, Smith hit a flare that dropped into center. Sinnie used her wheels and touched home to tie the ball game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Potts was able to get the first batter under the ball to pop up to the catcher, but Oklahoma's Grace Green worked a full count walk to get a runner on first. Potts would strike out Lynnsie Elam for the second out of the inning and Green would steal second. With a 1-1 count, Grace Lyons hit a gapper to centerfield, scoring Green to walk it off.
The Arlington, Texas, native pitched a complete seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, while striking out seven against No. 3 Oklahoma.
In the nightcap, the Aggies took on No. 1 UCLA. The Bruins were able to get on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning, plating five runs on five hits, which included two, two-run home runs.
Sophomore Makinzy Herzog got the Aggies on the board in the top of the third inning with a solo shot over the left field fence. This was Herzog's fourth home run of the year and just the third home run that UCLA's Megan Faraimo has allowed this season.
The Bruins tacked on two more runs to go ahead 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run by Jenavee Peres. UCLA would end the game in the bottom of the sixth after Aaliyah Jordan doubled down the right field line after back-to-back singles to walk it off, 9-1.
Freshman Ashley Daugherty entered the game in the second inning after replacing Payton McBride and recorded a career-high five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

WHAT THEY SAID
Head Coach Jo Evans
Game 1 vs. Oklahoma
On Kendall Potts in the circle…
"She was terrific. She threw her change up for strikes. She threw strikes when she needed them. She got us some big outs. Oklahoma got some infield hits and she could've gotten frustrated with that, but she didn't. Oklahoma had a lot of traffic early in the game and she shut it down. She gave up a run in the first inning and that was it. I thought she was phenomenal and really gutted it out. She threw five and a third innings yesterday, and then comes back today and throws a solid seven innings. I'm disappointed for her because she pitched well enough to win."
On the team making the routine plays…
"Kendall gave us a chance to get outs and we did that. I can see us growing up. I still see plays that we can probably make, but all in all, I really feel like our kids are starting to understand the game. They are understanding that those routine plays are the ones that win you ball games day in and day out. I thought we fought hard and really handled the pressure with them. They had a lot of base runners early on and there was a lot of traffic and we didn't let it get us down."
Head Coach Jo Evans
Game 2 vs. UCLA
On her thoughts following the game…
"UCLA came out and just crushed the ball in the first inning. We got the ball up in the strike zone and they took advantage of that. I was pleased to see [Payton] McBride finish that first inning with a couple of strikeouts to get herself back together. I thought Ashley Daugherty came in and did a really good job for us. She had some swings and misses. She got some strikeouts. UCLA is a really good ball club and there's a reason they haven't lost since last June. They just have a lot of offensive fire power and I thought their pitcher threw a really nice game."
