Three Questions with Steve Denton
Mar 19, 2020 | Men's Tennis
What are your thoughts on the men's tennis team's 2019-20 season ending the way it did?
"Very strange to think our season is already over this early, but I believe it will allow everyone to recharge the battery and gain a bit of perspective. Perhaps step back and take a deep breath, spend more time in prayer and reflection and to become more appreciative of what we have and not focus our attention on the things we don't have. Finally, have a more gracious attitude toward others who may not be as fortunate and are going through difficult times at the moment."
What did you tell your team?
"While it is disappointing that the season came to an abrupt halt when we had great momentum. I was very proud of them and how they had really come together as a team. Having said that, the decision to cancel the season was the right thing to do and that we should all use this time wisely. To get completely healthy and rest, to spend time with family when possible, to soon start working hard on their bodies and work on their individual tennis skills in preparation when competitions resume. Hopefully that will be some time in June. Most importantly, to finish the semester strong academically when it resumes next week."
How have you adjusted to the season being over so quickly?
"Personally, I am adjusting to a new schedule. A coach is always on the go. I have had numerous phone calls talking to other coaches, been also providing feedback to our staff and administration as well. Giving my thoughts on how we navigate giving our student athletes another year of competition that in my opinion they deserve and what that model looks like specifically for a nuanced sport like tennis. Additionally, I have been able to reacquaint myself with my family and spend time with them. I have started to work out again on a more consistent basis."
