
Aggies Shine at FINA Short Course Worlds

ABU DHABI, UAE -- Competition began Thursday at the FINA Short Course World Championships with 10 of 14 Aggies in action. Shaine Casas helped Team USA to a Bronze Medal in the 4x100m relay, while four swimmers set new national records for their respective countries.
Casas clocked a 46.50 split, swimming the third leg in the final of the 4x100m free relay to help his team claim third with a time of 3:05.42. He also advanced to Friday's final in the 100m back after tying for first in the semifinal with a time of 49.57.
Angel Martinez became Mexico's first swimmer to make a world championship final when he notched a top-eight finish in the 200m fly prelims and eventually took seventh in the final with a time of 1:52.00.
Current A&M senior Kaloyan Bratanov, representing Bulgaria, and freshman Munzy Kabbara, representing Lebanon, lowered their respective national records in the 200m IM, with Bratanov clocking in at 1:56.28 and Kabbara at 1:57.64. Sophomore Jerard Jacinto's times of 53.69 in the 100m back prelims became the new standard in the event in the Philippines.
On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Szklaruk Traipe set a new Chilean national record with a time of 1:01.36 in the 100m back prelims.
Competition continues Friday and will run through Tuesday, Dec. 21. Prelims begin at 11:30 p.m. CT, with finals following at 8 a.m. CT and can be seen on the Olympic Channel.
