Apr 22, 2022 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Nathan Dettmer and Jacob Palisch combined to hold the No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks to five hits in a 2-1 win in Friday evening's series opener on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Dettmer (W, 4-2) yielded one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Palisch earned a 4.0-inning save, equaling a career high with seven strikeouts while scattering two hits and one walk.
Texas A&M (24-13, 9-7 SEC) took advantage of an error in the fourth inning to score two runs. Troy Claunch drove in the go-ahead run and Kole Kaler was issued a bases-loaded walk to push across the decisive run.
Arkansas (30-8, 11-5 SEC) scratched out a run in the sixth inning to trim the lead to 2-1. The Razorbacks put two runners in scoring position to start the seventh inning, but Palisch struck out the next two batters he faced and then induced a bases-loaded fly out to end the threat.
The Aggies improved to 8-2 on the season against teams in the USA Today Coaches Top 25, including 6-2 against teams in the top 10.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle
On the all-around pitching performance tonight…
"Good teams find a variety of ways to win. It was certainly an offensive night with the wind blowing the way it was, but there was elite pitching. The lefty (Evan Taylor) they brought in had a super impressive arm and we know there are more of them down in the bullpen."
Graduate catcher Troy Claunch
On being able to execute in many ways…
"We have had a really good offense lately, but it is awesome to see that we can do both. When you can get a good start out of Dett (Nathan Dettmer) and then you have Palisch back there to back him up and go the rest of the way it feels good."
Sophomore RHP Nathan Dettmer
On what he learned through his pitching performance tonight…
"I think the adrenaline may have gotten to me a bit in the first inning. I tried throughout the game to match that. I was talking to Coach Yeskie as he said it was a moment to learn from, instead of just trying to match it, it is okay to pitch a lower mile per-hour and locate instead. That is what I will definitely do next time. It was a learning experience,"
Graduate LHP Jacob Palisch
On getting a save…
"Coming out of the bullpen you are going to be put in some weird situations and really it is all about collecting outs. We can't control what happens when we let go of that ball. I know I have eight of the best infielders and outfielders behind me. It makes it pretty easy to execute and pitch."
