Barker Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Jan 24, 2023 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas A&M women's basketball's Janiah Barker was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after her dominant return to the court on Sunday, the league office announced.
Barker, after missing the past 10 games due to injury, made a triumphant return to the hardwood on Sunday, pouring in 24 points and going 10-of-11 from the field against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs. Her scoring explosion helped lead A&M to a 75-73 victory over UGA, the first conference win of the season for the Maroon & White.
The Marietta, Georgia, native also hauled in five rebounds with two blocks in just 20 minutes of action. Her presence helped boost A&M to its highest scoring output of the season.
Barker became the first Aggie to be named the SEC Freshman of the Week since Chennedy Carter on Feb. 26, 2018. She also joins Peyton Little, Courtney Walker and Carter as the only players in program history to earn the accolade.
