Portland Rallies Past Aggies in Series Opener

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas –?The No. 5 Texas A&M baseball team dropped the opener of the three-game series to the Portland Pilots, 10-3, on Friday night on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Things were tight throughout, but a key overturned double play in the seventh inning set the table for a go-ahead double by Portland's (4-1) Nich Klemp, and the Pilots went on to score seven times with two outs in the ninth to put it away.
Nathan Dettmer threw well in his second start for the Aggies (3-2), tossing 6.1 innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, walking four and striking out seven before taking a no-decision. Freshman Justin Lamkin was saddled with the loss despite facing just two hitters in relief.
For the Pilots, starter Joey Gattrell got them into the fifth inning before giving way to Jack Folkins who threw 3.0 shutout frames to earn his first win of the year. Kade Segel then entered in a one-run game in the eighth and got out of a tough spot before eventually earning his first save of the year.

Bost led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Werner doubled to right center field and two errors allowed Bost to score from first and Werner to come all the way home.
T5 | TAMU 2, POR 1
Cooney reached on an error to start the inning. Scott singles to center field, allowing Cooney to take third. Cooney scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Holcroft.
T7 | POR 3, TAMU 2
With two outs, Scott reached on a fielder's choice and Holcroft drew a walk. Klemp doubled to left center field to score Scott and Holcroft.
T9 | POR 10, TAMU 2
Scott singled to left field with two outs. Holcroft walked to put runners on first and second. Klemp singled through the left side to score Scott. Scavotto walked to load the bases. Knight singled up the middle to score Holcroft and Klemp. Patacsil walked to reload the bases. A bases-loaded walk to Saunders scored Scavotto. Cooney singled to right center field to score Patacsil and Knight. Toglia walked to load the bases. Scott walked to score Saunders.
B9 | POR 10, TAMU 3
Thompson and Kent Walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Moss singled to score Thompson.

On the game overall…
"We're searching to find the right guys out of the bullpen to come in and do the job that's being done to us. In the last two games, I thought that Lamar's and Portland's bullpen both came in and did exactly what we saw on the scouting report: threw strikes. They did what they do. One guy was an off-speed pitcher. The other guy had a really good arm and a good breaking ball. He filled up the strike zone. In their at-bats, they stayed above the baseball, hitting the ball on the ground, low liners, the north wind blowing in and we didn't put enough good balls in play like that. We knew the starting pitcher would be tough. This is a good team. They have good pitchers that mix pitches, and we were just hitting the ball in the air. It's not all bad. We play really good defense, we're catching great."
On the early season struggles...
"The season will tell us what we are. We've got some guys that are pressing. In the last two games, we've been the younger team and we're supposed to be the veteran team. We're starting three freshmen and most of the guys coming out of the bullpen are young. There is some learning curve going on."
