Aggies Rally Past Stanford at NCAA Regional
Jun 04, 2023 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 25 Texas A&M Aggies used a pair of clutch doubles by Hunter Haas to move into the driver's seat of the Stanford Regional with an 8-5 win over No. 6 Stanford on Saturday night at Sunken Diamond.
Haas delivered a two-run double in the sixth to tie the game and then came up big again in the seventh with a three-run two-bagger to surge the Aggies ahead. Matt Dillard and Troy Wansing then shut the door on the homestanding Cardinal, working out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the ninth.
The Aggies worked three free bases from Stanford starter Joey Dixon and got a single from Jack Moss in the first, to take an early 1-0 lead on a ground ball by Jordan Thompson. Lamkin nearly made that hold up through the first inning but surrendered a two-run homer to Braden Montgomery with two outs in the home half of the opening frame.
Stanford added single runs in each of the next two innings to push the lead to 4-1 before the Aggies answered with a run in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Austin Bost and Brett Minnich.
Evan Aschenbeck and Brandyn Garcia each pitched out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings, setting the Ags up to tie things up in the top of the sixth. Consecutive two-out walks to Minnich and Max Kaufer prompted the Cardinal to bring in reliever Drew Dowd from the pen. But Hunter Haas greeted him with a two-out, two-run double into the left-center field gap that knotted the game at 4-4.
Two innings later Haas struck again, giving the Aggies the lead for the first time. A&M put the first three hitters of the inning on base to open the inning, but Dowd was able to get the first out when be retired Kaufer on strikes. He was not as fortunate with Haas who shot a double into the left-field corner to clear the bases and give the Aggies a 7-4 advantage.
A sacrifice fly by Bost gave the Maroon & White an insurance run in the top of the ninth before a combined pitching effort by Matt Dillard and Troy Wansing shut the door.
