No. 6 Aggies Top TCU
Jan 13, 2024 | Men's Swimming and Diving
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 6 Texas A&M men's swimming & diving team returned to action Saturday, topping TCU 175-125 at the University Rec Center to move to 7-0 in dual meets this year.
Baylor Nelson began the individual events with a first-place finish in the 1000 free (9:04.41) and later closed things out clocking a top time of 1:47.84 in the 200 IM. He also teamed up with Connor Foote, Seth Reno and Carter Nelson in the 200 free relay, touching the wall first with a time of 1:19.96.
Individually, Foote clocked a top time of 46.90 in the 100 fly and Reno added first-place points with a time of 44.58 in the 100 free. Trey Dickey went 4:28.51 to take first in the 500 free and added a second-place finish in the 200 fly (1:47.37).
Thomas Shomper and Tyler Hulet clocked the top two times in each of the backstroke events as Shomper went 47.59 in the 100 and 1:43.97 in the 200, while Hulet was right behind him with times of 48.15 in the 100 and 1:45.81 in the 200.
The Aggies continued their dominance on the springboards, posting the top four scores on each board. Victor Povzner led the way with top scores of 390.85 on the 1-meter and 427.10 on the 3-meter.
POST MEET QUOTES
Head coach Jay Holmes on the team's performance...
"The good news about today is that we responded the correct way after we got down. Other than that there wasn't anything pretty. On the opening relay we had two of our relay teams DQ'ed which caused us to immediately be down 15-2. In the first half of the meet we only won two events (1000 free and 100 back) and were down 81-50. At that first break we didn't really have to talk to the guys, actually didn't say anything to them. They all knew we were losing and something had to change quickly. While we did change the line-up in that first break, it was our guys doing what needed to be done that was good to see. We needed to start going 1-2 in events, which started happening and that was how we got back into it.
"Diving was huge for us today. They did their job sweeping their events and allowing us to get back in the meet. Going 1-2-3 in both events makes for a big boost to a team, especially when that team is currently behind like we were.
"Credit TCU for giving us a great meet. They pretty much backed us into a corner and forced our team to respond, but we are thankful it turned out right for us today."
