RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The No. 12 women's golf team defeated No. 4 USC, 4-2, on Saturday at the Diego Duel on the Farms Golf Club.
"We competed really hard and beat a good team," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "I thought our energy was great, we kept our emotions in a good place and I was very impressed. We dropped the first two matches of the day but were in control of the other four. We played well and got some good match play experience against a very strong team."
The Aggies avenged their 3-2 loss to close the fall season at the East Lake Cup against the Trojans by turning in a dominant 4-2 match play victory in the Golden State.
No. 2 amateur in the world and freshman phenom Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio earned the first point for A&M, 3&2, after the Maroon & White had fallen behind in a 2-0 early deficit.
Her sister and 2022 All-American Blanca Fernández García-Poggio clinched the second point for A&M just minutes after the first hit the board. The graduate student won her match 3&1.
Redshirt freshman Mia Nixon drilled a clutch 10-foot par putt on 17 to secure the third point for the Aggies, 2&1, leaving the outright victory up to All-American Jennie Park who was all square thru 16.
Park would win No. 17 to go up one hole with one remaining. The victory on 17 clinched the match for the Aggies, as USC could only tie her match with no extra holes being available due to match rules. However, Park would close the door and leave no doubt by winning 18 to secure the 4-2 victory and her match, 2UP.
Sky Sudberry lost her match 5&4 while Zoe Slaughter also dropped hers, 3&2.
The Farms Golf Club is located less than 20 miles away from the site of the 2024 NCAA Championships, which will be played at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa May 17-22. The Aggies have advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships in back-to-back years.
