Nov 01, 2024 | Volleyball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M claimed its third-straight win as it downed Alabama Friday evening in Reed arena, 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-12).
The Aggies (15-4, 6-3 SEC) captured their sixth conference win of the season in a four-set battle versus the Crimson Tide (10-10, 2-7 SEC). After dropping the opening frame, the Maroon & White rallied to win three straight behind a balanced showing of offense and defense, as they logged 56 kills, 61 digs and 12 blocks as a group.
Alabama strung together a run to start the match, prompting head coach Jamie Morrison to call his first timeout, 12-7. A&M cut into the Crimson Tide's deficit late (23-21), but Alabama held to take the opener, 25-22.
Flipping the momentum, the Aggies rushed out to three-point advantage forcing Alabama to huddle up (13-10). The onslaught continued behind seven kills in nine A&M points, as it extended the lead to five (22-17). The Maroon & White held their rhythm and a service error from the Crimson Tide ensured the set win, 25-19.
Alabama opened the third frame as the aggressor prompting an A&M break, 12-6. The Crimson Tide maintained the lead in the match and held two match points in hand (24-22), however the Aggies answered scoring back-to-back points courtesy of an Alabama error and a kill from Ifenna Cos-Okpalla. Heading into extras, the teams found themselves tied once again at 25, before a pair of Crimson Tide errors sealed the set (27-25) and lead in the match, 2-1.
With sights set on closing out the fixture, A&M came out firing in the fourth forcing Alabama to burn an early timeout (9-3). Picking up where they left off after the break, the Aggies tacked on another 5-1 run behind Cos-Okpalla at the service line (14-4). Pushing on, the Maroon & White closed the set (25-12) and match behind Logan Lednicky's 14th kill of the night, 3-1.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Jamie Morrison on today's match …
"Our number one trait is grit and finding ways to win and we did just that tonight. It was not the prettiest game, but we found times where we needed it and had it. That's one of the most important things you can have in a team."
Morrison on tonight's crowd ...
"I'm going to give props to our student section. There was so many times throughout the match, we started to play a song and it wrapped up, but our student section was still singing. It cool that we have this environment, where people are there supporting us, but also enjoying themselves too."
PLAYER'S QUOTES
Junior MB Ifenna Cos-Okpalla on team's mentality in tough moments ...
"We knew coming in that this is a good Alabama team. We knew it would not be an easy match so, we knew we would have to fight, and I think we did. Staying calm, implementing what we learned in practice and sticking to our game and playing style, is something we had to go back to. Instead of everyone going off on their own, we just focused on staying together, staying calm, cool, collected and just keep playing volleyball."
Junior L/DS Ava Underwood on tonight's win …
"I think, first off, is that every win in the SEC is a good win. We came off that nine day break like, 'Alright, we're back at home. It's time to show up and put on a performance.' We were really pumped to be in front of the 12th Man again, there's nowhere like home. I think we did a really good job of racking up that win at home and moving forward. I think the bounce-back from the Texas game just proves that it was a win we should have had."
