No. 23 Aggies Knock Off No. 21 Buckeyes in Non-Conference Play
Nov 15, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 23 Texas A&M men's basketball team took an early lead that it would never relinquish in a 78-64 takedown of the No. 21 Ohio State Buckeyes in front of a crowd of 11,658 on Friday night at Reed Arena.
It was the third-largest regular season non-conference crowd at Reed Area and was the largest since 2016 when there were 12,473 in the stands to watch the Aggies demolish Iowa State, 72-62, in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
The Aggies, who won their third straight game to improve to 3-1, held a nine-point advantage at 31-22 at the break and then hit a quick 3-pointer to establish a double-digit lead and the Buckeyes never got closer than 11 for the rest of the game.
The Aggies earned an amazing 40 free throw attempts and converted 32 of the chances into points. Manny Obaseki led the way with an 8-of-9 night at the line and Zhuric Phelps and Wade Taylor IV chipped in seven freebies. For the game, the Aggies connected on 80.0% of their free throw attempts.
Obaseki and Taylor tied for the team lead with 15 points and were joined in double figures by Phelps with 14 and Henry Coleman III with 12. Solomon Washington led the way with eight rebounds, while Coleman pulled down six, including four off the offensive glass.
For Taylor, it was his 17th career game with double figure points against an AP Top 25 team. Last season, the graduate from Dallas was the nation's No. 3 scorer against ranked teams with a 22.2 average in 10 games.
Once again, the Aggies' bench was productive with 40 points. Texas A&M came into the game averaging 40.3 points from its reserves. Buoyed by Obaseki and Coleman's strong offensive effort, the Maroon & White's bench scored more than half of the team's total points with 40.
In a rarity, the Aggies were out-rebounded on the offensive glass, 13-12, by the Buckeyes, although Texas A&M enjoyed a 39-33 advantage in total rebounds. The Aggies were more productive with their offensive rebounds as they had a 16-9 advantage in second-chance points.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Senior Guard Wade Taylor
On the Aggies mentality …
"I don't think we worry too much about what other people think. I think us coming out here tonight and playing for one another showed what our program is built on. We know we have a deep team. We have a lot of veteran guys ready to step up and make plays, and we did that tonight."
Senior Guard Manny Obaseki
On taking advantage of mismatches …
"We knew we had a lot of mismatches, so we had to take them. They couldn't guard us, so they just started fouling and we got to the bonus. I think we executed well, and I think our mentality going into this game and throwing that first punch set the tone. "
Head Coach Buzz Williams
On Manny Obaseki having a big game …
"We always have a personnel meeting the night before the game, and I told the guys when we started the meeting yesterday, 'I could be wrong but my instinct says Mo [Manny Obaseki] is going to be really good tomorrow,' because I thought he had his best two days of practice and in the film room this week."
On the coaching staff's adjustments …
"I thought the adjustments that our staff made relative to their [Ohio State's] personnel and talent was tremendous. I think we had six turkeys [three stops in a row] in the first half, and we got two stops to end the first half and one to begin the second half to make it seven turkeys. Those first 20 minutes of the game were really good."
