Cos-Okpalla Ties Program Record as Aggies Down Georgia, 3-1
Nov 22, 2024 | Volleyball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M volleyball team won its second-straight match behind Ifenna Cos-Okpalla's program-record 13 block outing versus Georgia Friday evening in Reed Arena, 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18).
The Aggies (17-7, 8-6 SEC) put on a defensive clinic in their victory over the Bulldogs (10-14, 4-10 SEC), as Cos-Okpalla tied Kaitlyn Blake (2016) for the A&M record for blocks in a four-set match with 13 on the night. The Aggie junior's 13 spearheaded the team's 19 total as a team, also setting the programs' season high for blocks in a match this year.
A&M came out of the gate on fire, logging five kills at .571 hitting percentage paired with four blocks to lead by four early (10-6). The Bulldogs battled back to knot the teams at 15 at the midway point of the frame. Georgia continued its rhythm to take the opener, 25-18.
Responding in the second, the Maroon & White forged another four-point advantage at the beginning of the set as the Bulldogs called timeout, 11-7. A&M held its lead behind Cos-Okpalla who recorded three blocks and a kill as Georgia huddled up for the second time in the frame, 20-16. The Bulldogs clawed back late, but it wasn't enough as the Maroon & White closed the set (25-20) with back-to-back blocks once again from Cos-Okpalla and leveled the match, 1-1.
The teams traded blows in the third, as neither side led by more than two points at the midway point of the frame and were knotted at 14. Creating separation, the Aggies ripped off a 7-2 streak forcing Georgia to burn both its timeouts (21-16). The onslaught continued, as A&M punched home the third frame (25-19) to lead in the match, 2-1.
The Bulldogs held a two-point advantage early in the fourth (9-7), however the Maroon & White responded scoring five-straight as the Bulldogs huddled up (12-9). A&M stretched its advantage out by one point, as Logan Lednicky hit her 14th kill of the match which marked the 1,116th of her career and landed herself 15th on the Aggies all-time career kill list (17-13). The Maroon & White didn't look back, as they pushed on to take the set (25-18) and match, 3-1.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Jamie Morrison on today's match …
"I am excited about the way we are playing volleyball. One of the things we talk about a lot in our program is response. I didn't think we had a great first set, but I really appreciated the response in the second as we started to figure things out and got better and better as the match went on."
Morrison on Ifenna Cos-Okpalla's blocking …
"It starts with the baseline of what we did when we first got here, and it's turned her into a really efficient blocker. On top of that she has this innate ability to use her hands in different ways. I think her last block she was leaving to go to the go and all of a sudden she put the breaks on because her teammates said something different and just got her hands over the net. That is what it takes when you're really good at that skill, you have this innate ability to sniff out the ball and use your hands to direct in the direction you want and she's getting better and better at that."
PLAYER'S QUOTES
Junior MB Ifenna Cos-Okpalla on her blocking performance ...
"What I was seeing I was taking. My opposite and outsides were talking to me and telling me where they were going, making things easier in my head so I knew where to go quickly."
Junior OPP Logan Lednicky on the teams' rally in the final three sets …
"We knew we had it in us and that isn't the way we play. Just knowing that they weren't doing anything special, and that we needed to clean it up and take the next three."
