No. 13 Aggies Roll Past ACU in Final Non-Conference Tune-up
Dec 28, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 13 Texas A&M men's basketball team rolled past the ACU Wildcats, 92-54 on Saturday in the Aggies' final non-conference tune-up before SEC play begins next week.
It was the Maroon & White's seventh straight victory as the team closed out non-conference play with an 11-2 record. It matches the 11-2 non-conference worksheet from 2021-22 when the Aggies advanced to the championship game of the 2022 National Invitational Tournament. Texas A&M starts SEC play next Saturday at Reed Arena against the Texas Longhorns in the home version of the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown.
The Aggies jumped to a quick 9-0 lead as Henry Coleman III scored seven points before the Wildcats got on the scoreboard. The Aggies went on another hot streak midway through the half as C.J. Wilcher drained a trio of treys in less than a minute to power a 13-0 outburst. Texas A&M took a 19-point advantage into halftime at 48-29 and the lead never got below 20 points after the first bucket of the second half.
Wade Taylor IV logged his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, as he continued his climb of the school's all-time scoring list. Taylor, the graduate from Dallas, moved into sole possession of second place on the list as he surpassed Hall of Famer Vernon Smith's 1,778 points from 1977-81. Only Hall of Famer Bernard King's 1,990 career points are ahead of Taylor's 1,779 career points.
Joining Taylor in double figures were Wilcher with 14 points, Andersson Garcia and Zhuric Phelps with 12. Phelps tallied his first double-double at A&M as he pulled down 10 rebounds. Led by Wilcher, the Aggies' bench provided 45 of the team's 92 points.
Texas A&M doubled-up ACU in rebounds, 41-20, while also reeling in 16 offensive rebounds which led to a whopping 46 points in the paint. The Aggies shot a season-high 58.5% from the field and also logged their third straight game of 40% from beyond the arc on 8-of-20 on 3-point tries. The Aggies earned 30 trips to the free throw line and converted 22 freebies.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Senior Guard Wade Taylor
On being back …
"It was good to be back. It's a blessing to be here with my teammates. After being out, I feel like I learned to be thankful for everything. I feel like we came out today with a lot of energy. When guys are feeling confident and playing to the best of their abilities, I feel like our ceiling is really high."
Graduate Guard CJ Wilcher
On the program's chemistry …
"This is probably the most connected program I've ever been a part of. From staff to staff, player to staff, player to player, player to manager – everybody is on the same page, and if we're not we point it out. And that is one thing that I value. I try to meet that standard every day."
Head Coach Buzz Williams
On having Wade Taylor IV back in the lineup...
"I hate that [Wade] had to miss his first game ever. I think in hindsight, giving him rest was probably the right move. Not only prior to the Houston Christian game but also going into Christmas break. He brings not only his talent, but he brings some calmness to our group, and I also think he makes the other players on the floor better, which I think was pretty evident today."
