No. 8 Texas A&M Closes Dual Meet Season Hosting SMU
Feb 01, 2024 | Men's Swimming and Diving
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The No. 8 Texas A&M men's swimming & diving team hosts No. 25 SMU in its final dual meet of the season Friday at the Rec Center Natatorium. The Senior Day meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. with the team honoring its 11 seniors prior to the start of competition as the Aggies are in search of their ninth dual meet victory of the year.
Texas A&M is coming off a pair of come-from-behind road victories, most recently topping LSU last weekend, 182-118. Baylor Nelson highlighted the victory, taking down the 200 free, 200 IM and 400 free relay pool records. He also posted the third-fastest time in program history in the 500 free, going 4:19.06. This made it back-to-back meets in which he added his name to the A&M record books after posting the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 1000 free (9:04.41) in the TCU victory the week before. Thomas Shomper also dominated the backstroke events for the second straight meet, clocking top times of 47.38 in the 100 and 1:44.98 in the 200. Tyler Hulet again added key points for the Aggies, taking third in both backstroke events with times of 48.59 in the 100 and 1:45.85 in the 200.
The divers have impressed all season as Victor Povzner recently earned SEC Male Diver of the Week for the second time this season after sweeping the springboards at TCU. Allen Bottego also earned the SEC weekly honor three times early in the season. Against LSU, at least three Aggies scored in the top four on both springboards as Bottego's score of 370.35 helped him secure the top spot on the 3-meter and Rhett Hensley was just behind him in second with a score of 368.03. Povzner took first on the 1-meter with a score of 369.98.
SMU is the fifth ranked team on A&M's schedule this season and the first the Aggies have faced since taking down No. 7 Texas and No. 23 Georgia Tech in a double dual in November. The Mustangs are 2-1 in dual meets this season and most recently fell to North Carolina 114-84 in January.
The meet will stream live on SEC Network+, while live results can be found on the Meet Mobile App.
