MEET PREVIEW: Charlie Thomas Invitational
Feb 01, 2024 | Track and Field
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M track & field teams conclude their home indoor slate this weekend at the R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field with the Charlie Thomas Invitational. Events start at 12:45 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
"We had a good showing at the Razorback Invitational" head coach Pat Henry said. "We had people step up as the level of competition stepped up. We're starting to see our team come together and we still have people to put in these situations."
Taking their show on the road, the Aggies traveled to the Razorback Invitational last time out. In a stacked field, A&M broke a pair of school records, the first was Heather Abadie in the women's pole vault, clearing 4.38m/14-4.5 which ranks No. 1 in the conference and No. 7 in the nation this season. Cooper Cawthra followed suit, recording the second-ever sub-four minute mile in program history, finishing the race in 3:59.05 to down the all-time mark.
Connor Schulman and Ja'Qualon Scott impressed in the men's 60m hurdles, as the duo secured a 1-2 result, both finishing in 7.68, with Schulman taking the win by one one-thousandth of a second. Scott was one of 10 athletes to move up in the top-12 performers list, as he moved up to No. 3 all-time.
Semira Killebrew tied teammate Camryn Dickson for second on the performers list in the 60m, running 7.22. Sevanna Hanson and Ella Vajdos also climbed in the pole vault, moving to No. 7 (4.08m/13-4.25) and No. 10 (3.83m/12-6.75), respectively. In the 800m, Bailey Goggans moved up a spot to No. 4 all time (2:03.83), while Kimar Farquharson entered the list at No. 7 (1:47.81). Victor Kibiego debuted at No. 4 in the men's 3,000m (8:05.60) and Ondrej Gajdos made moves in the men's mile to No. 8 (4:02.62). Joniar Thomas improved to No. 6 in the pentathlon (3986), and John Baker rounded out the marks as he landed No. 10 all-time in the men's long jump (7.67m/25-2).
"We've really focused on bringing in quality programs to compete here this year," coach Henry added. "This will be another great meet in our new facility, as we're inviting teams who will make it a competitive environment."
The Aggies host 11 teams across the two day meet, including ACU, Arizona State, Houston, New Mexico Junior College, Oklahoma, Sam Houston, SFA, Texas State, UCLA, UTSA and Western Texas College.
