Feb 24, 2024 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE – Texas A&M's Lamara Distin broke the women's NCAA indoor high jump record on the way to her third-straight SEC title on the final day of the SEC Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Distin shattered the women's NCAA indoor high jump record, as she became the first collegian to jump 2.00m/6-6.75. She cleared her opening six heights all on the first attempt which ensured her third-straight SEC indoor high jump title after she soared over 1.97m/6-5.5. With history on the line Distin raised the bar once more, and on her third and final attempt, she cleared the record-breaking mark and wrote her name in history.
Connor Schulman and Ja'Qualon Scott did what they have done all season and secured a 1-2 finish in the men's 60m hurdles. Schulman crossed the line in a huge personal best time of 7.59, this tied him at the No. 1 spot on the Texas A&M all-time performers list. Scott was right behind, as he tied his best time of 7.60 to secure the silver medal.
Sam Whitmarsh, competing at his first SEC Indoor Championships, added an individual title of his own in the men's 800m. He finished the race in a personal-best time of 1:47.39 to ensure his gold medal.
The men's 4x400m relay squad ended the meet on a high note, as the quartet of Auhmad Robinson, Jevon O'Bryant, Scott and Kimar Farquharson brought home the silver medal in a season's best 3:03.62. The time was good for No. 10 on the all-time list and ranks the group sixth in the country.
On the women's side, Camryn Dickson, Jaydan Wood, Nissi Kabongo and Jermaisha Arnold ended their championships with a bronze-medal winning performance in the 4x400m. They crossed the line in 3:28.77 which puts them sixth in A&M history and in the nation this year.
Ushan Perera and Carter Bajoit battled in the men's high jump and split the bronze medal, as the pair each cleared 2.11m/6-11. This was the second career SEC indoor high jump medal for both Aggies.
The Maroon & White picked up a plethora of fourth-place results on the final day. Cooper Cawthra ran 4:01.87 in a competitive men's mile, his time was the seventh-fastest performance in school history. Semira Killebrew immediately followed in the women's 60m with a time of 7.22, which ranks 14th in the nation. O'Bryant logged important points for the men's squad, running 46.42 in the men's 400m. Bailey Goggans crossed the line just shy of her personal best in the women's 800m (2:02.99), while Farquharson finished the men's 800m in 1:48.26.
Kabongo added points to the team total placing fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.80m/5-10.75. Coach's Quotes
Head coach Pat Henry on the team's performance at the SEC Indoor Championships…
"I'm pleased with the effort we showed this week. We finished third on the men's side and fourth on the women's which are good finishes for our teams. We've put ourselves in a good position for the next couple of weeks, now we need to wait and see where we sit across the rest of the country.
"Lamara Distin was outstanding today. She not only set the collegiate high jump record jumping higher than any female has jumped before, but she also was awarded SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year which just shows how special she really is."
