Aggies Finish Runner-Up Behind a Pair of Top-10 Finishes at MountainView Collegiate
Mar 17, 2024 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 17 Texas A&M women's golf team finished runner-up on Sunday at the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve at Saddlebrooke after Adela Cernousek and Blanca Fernández García-Poggio both turned in top-10 performances.
"We had a great start, but got outplayed in the final nine holes," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said, "We couldn't have asked for a better start but made some mistakes on the back nine. We are really close and are moving in the right direction. Our ball striking is great, and we just need to capitalize on some of the opportunities that we are leaving out there."
The Aggies (-12) finished with runner-up honors to South Florida (-16) who fired an 11-under 277 in the final round. Texas A&M shot a 7-under 281 but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Bulls. Houston (-4), Arkansas (-1) and Iowa State (-1) rounded out the top five.
Cernousek turned in a stellar 3-under 69 in the third round. The junior was propelled by an eagle on No. 3, the second of her weekend, and notched the fourth top-10 outing of her season. Blanca Fernández García-Poggio recorded a team-high seven birdies in the final 18 and registered a 2-under 70. Cernousek and Blanca Fernández García-Poggio tied for sixth at 5-under 211 for the 54-hole tournament.
Jennie Park recorded a steady even-par round on Sunday and tied for 17th at 1-under 215. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio jumped 12 spots in the final round after firing a 2-under 70. The freshman tied for 23rd and was 1-over 217 for the tourney.
Zoe Slaughter tied for 54th and Mia Nixon took home a share of 61st while competing as an individual.
The Maroon & White will conclude the regular season March 22-24 at the Clemson Invitational in Sunset, South Carolina.
