BIRMINGHAM – For the first time this season, the Texas A&M baseball team picked up a pair of SEC weekly accolades as Chris Cortez was named the Co-Pitcher of the Week and Gavin Grahovac garnered Freshman of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon.
Overall, the weekly awards mark the third and fourth of the year for the Aggies.
Cortez, who earned his first career weekly honor, was brilliant in relief for the Maroon & White as the junior tossed 8.1 scoreless innings, struck out a league-best 15 batters and logged a 2-0 record. In Tuesday's win over UTSA, Cortez struck out seven over four scoreless frames as the Aggies completed the comeback. On Sunday, the junior calmed the early surge from No. 6 Vanderbilt and delivered 4.1 scoreless innings to go along with a career-high tying eight strikeouts. Cortez also only allowed three hits and two walks in his two appearances.
The two victories improved Cortez to 5-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.32. The junior also upped his strikeout total to 47 in only 31 total innings.
Grahovac claimed his first career weekly honor after registering a .400/.526/.867 slash line and helping guide the Maroon & White to its first sweep of a ranked opponent since 2016. The freshman homered twice, plated three RBI, drew four walks and scored eight times in the four contests. Both of the rookie's homers came on the weekend, including a 432-foot solo blast to leadoff the bottom half of the first Saturday.
For the season, Grahovac has doubled 11 times, belted 13 homers and driven in 42 RBI, which ranks seventh in the SEC. The freshman is also hitting .327 with a .423 on-base percentage.
Texas A&M concludes its five-game homestand tomorrow night as they host Air Force in midweek action at 4 p.m. at Blue Bell Park.
