ORLANDO – Texas A&M's Mary Stoiana was named to the USTA Collegiate Summer Team for the second-straight year, the organization announced Wednesday. The athletes selected will take part in a training program designed to help America's premier college players assimilate to professional tennis.
Stoiana was selected for the USTA Collegiate Summer Team for the second-straight season along with five other female players across the country and six men. The athletes were chosen based on rankings, individual collegiate tournament results or Intercollegiate Tennis Association honors. Her selection means she is eligible to receive a grant for travel to USTA Pro Circuit events and provides her with coaching support over the summer.
"I'm so happy for Mary [Stoiana] as she continues to be honored for all of her accomplishments this season," head coach Mark Weaver said. "It's another great opportunity for Mary this summer that will give her the proper help and support for to have a successful summer. This experience will help put her in a very good position for her final year of collegiate tennis."
During the spring campaign, she helped the Aggies capture their first National Championship in program history. Individually Stoiana secured 25 victories in singles and 20 in doubles during dual-match season. Her performances helped her claim a plethora of honors throughout the year, including back-to-back SEC Player of the Year honors, NCAA Tournament MVP, NCAA All-Tournament Team accolades in singles and doubles, All-America distinction in singles and doubles and finally All-SEC First Team honors. She concluded the year still being the top-ranked player with an outstanding singles record of 38-4 which converts to a 90.5 winning percentage, the highest among all ranked players in the country.
