Aggies Shine on Opening Day of U.S. Olympic Team Trials

EUGENE – Former Texas A&M track & field standout Jacob Wooten reached the pole vault final, while another eight Aggies booked semifinal spots on the opening day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Friday at Hayward Field.
Wooten headlined the opening day of competition in Oregon, as he booked his spot in the men's pole vault final following a second place overall finish in the qualifying round with a clearance of 5.70m/18-8.25.
The men's 400m event opened the action on the track, as Aggie all-time great and two time Olympic medal winner Bryce Deadmon earned automatic qualification to the semifinals with a second-place finish in heat three with a time of 45.21. Jevon O'Bryant also ensured his advancement as the final time qualifier, crossing the line in 45.51.
In the women's 400m event right after, the Maroon & White punched another pair of spots to the semifinal round. Shamier Little topped all competitors in the event with a mark of 50.13, while Jermaisha Arnold advanced 11th overall in 51.20.
The women's 800m group were up next on the track, and once again the Aggies put out another strong showing. Sammy Watson advanced second out of heat one (2:01.72), Athing Mu moved on after finishing third in heat two (2:01.73) and Kendra Coleman claimed the final time qualifying spot out of heat three (2:02.45).
Wrapping the semifinal spots from day one on the track was Semira Killebrew, as she finished fourth in heat four crossing the line in 11.20 which ensured automatic qualification to the next round.

The Aggies return to Hayward Field tomorrow for day two of the trials, where Killebrew, Arnold and Little will compete in their respective semifinals, while Fred Kerley competes in the first round of the men's 100m and Will Williams starts his campaign in the long jump qualification rounds.
