Aggies take first shot at earning 500th win in program history.
STORRS, Conn. – The Texas A&M Aggies test their mettle against one of the most historic women's soccer programs when they battle the UConn Huskies Sunday at Morrone Stadium.
The noon contest has the Maroon & White battling a UConn squad that ranks second all-time among NCAA Division I teams in wins with 620. Meanwhile a victory would make Texas A&M the 13th Division I program to reach the 500-win plateau. The Aggies would become the first SEC and Lone Star State team to hit the mark.
The Aggies ride into Storrs on a three-match win streak with 2-0 wins against TCU, Louisiana Tech and Central Connecticut State. All of Texas A&M's wins have been shutouts with three goalkeepers keeping clean sheets. Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Sydney Fuller and Grace McClellan have two blankings apiece while and Maysen Veronda has one.
Texas A&M can lay claim to being queens of Connecticut with a victory, already owning wins against Fairfield (3-0) and Central Connecticut (2-0).
This marks the first matchup between the Aggies and Huskies since Texas A&M fired up the program in 1993. The Aggies are 5-1-0 all-time against current members of the Big East, including 3-0-0 against Marquette and 1-0-0 against DePaul and St. John's. The lone loss came against Butler in 2017.
UConn enters play on a five-match win streak. The run includes victories over New Hampshire (1-0), Boston University (2-0), Cal State Fullerton (2-0), Rhode Island (3-1) and Yale (2-1). The season started with a 2-2 draw with Vermont and a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin.
Chioma Okafor has scored six of the Huskies' 13 goals. Lina Dantes is the only other multi-goal scorer with two. The net is minded by Kaitlyn Mahoney who boasts a 0.86 goals-against average, .727 save percentage, 16 saves and three shutouts.
UConn boasts seven College Cup appearances, including runner-up finishes in 1984, 1990, 1997 and 2003.
The match is available for streaming UConn+. A radio call of the match airs on Gospel 97.3 FM in the Brazos Valley with the audio also available in the 12th Man Mobile app
