Phelps Named to Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List

Texas A&M guard Zhuric Phelps was one of 50 college basketball standouts named to the 2024-25 Oscar Robertson Midseason Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced.

INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M guard Zhuric Phelps was one of 50 college basketball standouts named to the 2024-25 Oscar Robertson Midseason Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced on Monday. The Award is presented annually to college basketball's National Player of the Year.

Phelps, a transfer senior from Midland, Texas, leads the No. 10-ranked Aggies in scoring (310 points) and steals (38) and ranks among the team's leaders in 3-pointers, rebounds and assists. He's scored in double figures 16 times in 21 games this season, including 10 games with 15+ points.

Phelps, who played his first three collegiate seasons at SMU, has stepped up his impact in SEC play, averaging 17.2 points and 6.1 rebounds in nine league contests. He is one of three SEC players, and the lone guard, to average more than 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

When Wade Taylor IV missed three conference games due to injury, Phelps averaged 26.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in his absence, including a career-high 34-point outburst against No. 17 Oklahoma. Phelps powered the Aggies' 18-point comeback with 28 points in the second half and his 3-pointer with :19 seconds remaining provided the winning margin. It matched the most points by an Aggie in a road game against a ranked opponent, first accomplished by Jeff Overhouse against Oral Roberts in 1972.

The Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is to be announced at the NCAA Men's Final Four in San Antonio, from April 5-7. The formal presentation of the trophy will follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. A final watch list will be released in early March and those chosen will be included on the USBWA's annual awards ballot.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
