No. 2 Aggies Take Down San Diego to Improve to 4-0
Jan 31, 2025 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team claimed its 10th-straight victory and 59th-consecutive win at home versus San Diego, 6-1, at the Mitchell Tennis Center Friday.
Texas A&M (4-0) took the early lead in doubles with Nicole Khirin/Jeanette Mireles setting the tone in a 6-0 sweep over Kristina Nordikyan/Gabby Gregg on court 3. On court 2, Mia Kupres/Daria Smetannikov rallied back from a 3-2 deficit, winning four-straight games to secure a 6-3 victory and the doubles point.
No. 15 Nicole Khirin dominated on court 2 to double the Aggie advantage, taking down Claudia de las Heras in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Lexington Reed claimed the third point of the day on court 6 after defeating Gregg, 6-4, 6-0, for her 12th win of the season and ninth in a row.
Perez secured the victory on court 4, bludgeoning Anni Puls 6-0, 6-1 for her seventh-consecutive victory.
After the match was clinched, two Aggies bounced back from a first set loss to win in a super-tiebreaker to push the lead to six points, with Mary Stoiana claiming her team-high 8th ranked win of the year over No. 31 Kailey Evans on court 1 [4-6, 6-2, 1-0(4)]. Finally, Mia Kupres took down Nordikyan on court 3 to cap off the day [4-6, 6-2, 1-0(6)].
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Mark Weaver
On today's performance…
"Throughout the season, each match has gotten a little more challenging. Our opponents have gotten stronger and stronger. So overall, I'll take a 6-1 win against a very good San Diego team, which is a team we actually lost to last year, so obviously they're capable of performing at a high level. I don't know that we necessarily played our best tennis all throughout the six courts, but we found ways to get ourselves back in the matches we were down in."
On trying out new doubles lineups…
"I'm very pleased with how we played throughout the match. I was very pleased with the doubles combinations. We haven't really been able to practice Mary and Lu [Lucciana Perez] much at all. Lu's actually been pretty sick all week, so to her credit, she came out very strong today in both the doubles and the singles. Mary and Lu played one pro event back in the fall and played quite well together. We definitely have a couple different options for the doubles lineups, and I was very pleased with how we performed in the doubles all three courts."
