BALTIMORE, Md. – Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed was named a Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Finalist, the organization announced Friday.
Reed has been instrumental in leading Texas A&M to a 10-0 record, the program's best start since 1992. The redshirt sophomore has led the Aggies to an FBS-leading three road wins over teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 this season, powering an offense that sits No. 16 nationally at 464.1 yards per game. Reed has accounted for 28 touchdowns, including an SEC-best 22 passing scores, which is tied for ninth nationally. His 302.3 yards of total offense per game rank 13th nationally, while his 16.8 points responsible for per game stand seventh.
The Nashville, Tennessee, native leads the SEC with 14.7 yards per completion, good for fourth nationally. He also averages 9.0 yards per attempt, which ranks No. 2 in the league and 11th nationally. Reed has been even more dynamic on the biggest stages, averaging 16.0 yards per completion and 9.0-plus yards per attempt against AP Top 25 opponents, making him one of only two FBS quarterbacks to clear that mark. His 7.0 yards per rush against ranked foes is the best in the nation.
Reed is one of five quarterbacks nationally averaging more than 300 total yards per game against Top 25 opponents. He has produced 8.24 yards per play overall, including 8.6 yards per snap in road contests, which ranks second in the country. With Reed at the helm, the Aggies have topped 400 total yards in nine straight games, the program's longest in-season streak since Johnny Manziel led A&M to 13 straight 400-yard outings in 2012.
In just 24 career games, Reed is closing in on becoming the fifth quarterback in program history to reach both 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards. He enters this week's matchup with 4,870 passing yards and 983 rushing yards, joining company that includes Reggie McNeal, Stephen McGee, Kellen Mond and Manziel.
The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is presented annually to the nation's top senior or upperclassman quarterback who is on track to graduate with their class, embodying not only outstanding on-field performance but also character, citizenship, and leadership.
Texas A&M returns to action on Nov. 22 when the Aggies close out the regular season against the Samford Bulldogs at Kyle Field at 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network+.
