Meet Preview: Tiger Paw Invitational

CLEMSON – The Texas A&M Track & Field team hits the road to conclude its regular-season indoor slate at the Tiger Paw Invitational Feb. 14-15. Events begin on the opening day at 11 a.m. on and 9 a.m. on the final day.
The Aggies head to the home of the Tigers for their final tune up prior to the SEC Championships which will be held at home in the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track and Field facility. In the most recent USTFCCCA national rankings, both sides of the program hold spots in the top ten nationally. The men are ranked third and possess nine individual top ten marks, while the women are ranked seventh and hold four individual top ten marks.
Last Time Out
The Maroon & White impressed in their last outing, as they captured ten event wins, recorded seven updates to the A&M all-time performers list and added 33 personal-best showings.
The standout performance of the day belonged to the men's 4x400m, comprised of Auhmad Robinson, Hossam Eddine Hatib, Antonie Nortje and Kimar Farquharson. The group crossed the line in 3:02.88 to not only win the event, but also jump to the No. 1 spot nationally in the 4x400m standings.
Jaiya Covington kept up her trend of domination, as she put up a time of 8.09 in the 60m hurdles to finish as the top collegiate for the third-straight meet and secure her first overall victory of the season.
Other event winners on the track included Farquharson in the 800m (1:49.00), Jermaisha Arnold in the 400m (51.86), Camryn Dickson in the 60m (7.31), Kennady Fontenot in the women's 3,000m (9:23.61), Jonathan Chung in the men's 3,000m (8:13.69), Shewaye Johnson in the 5,000m (16:53.15) and the women's 4x400m relay, consisting of Latasha Smith, Yierra Flemings, Kennedy Wade and Arnold (3:32.51).
Shifting to the field, the Maroon & White secured a win on both sides of the triple jump. Winny Bii collected her third-consecutive title with a mark of 13.82m/45-4.25, while Jaydon Shield captured his first collegiate victory after jumping 15.33m/50-3.5. Heather Abadie also stood out at the meet, matching her school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40m/14-5.25 to place second.
The Field
Texas A&M will compete against a talented field of 30 teams in South Carolina this weekend, including seven ranked women's teams and six on the men's side. The full participating group consists of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Georgetown, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Mississippi State, North Carolina, NC State, Ohio State, UPenn, Penn State, Pittsburg, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, UCF, UCLA, USC, Washington State, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Top-Ranked Aggies
Aleksandr Solovev continues his reign at the top of the national ranks with his pole vault clearance of 5.80m/19-0.25. The men have another eight athletes in the top ten, including Ja'Qualon Scott in the 60m hurdles, Robinson in both the 200m and the 400m, Hatib in the 400m, two 4x400m relays, Mason Mangum in the long jump and Gavin Champ in the triple jump.
Covington leads the women with her number two ranking in the 60m hurdles. Other athletes ranked in the top ten in the nation include Arnold in the 400m, Bii in the triple jump and Sofia Yakushina in the pentathlon.
