BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M women's tennis team bolstered its roster for the 2025-26 season with the addition of Illinois transfer Violeta Martinez, head coach Mark Weaver announced Monday.
"We are delighted to announce the signing of Violeta," Martinez said. "She comes in with a wealth of experience and will be ready to go once she arrives here at Texas A&M. Violeta plays with great energy and fight. She is extremely quick around the court combined with some excellent shot making. She is a great addition to our tennis team."
As a junior in 2024-25, Martinez ranked as high as No. 111 in singles and No. 67 in doubles. She spent most of her time on Court 3, but posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Indiana's Marina Fuduric in her lone Big Ten appearance on Court 2. She clinched Illinois' NCAA Tournament first round victory over No. 30 Arizona with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Martyna Ostrzygalo. Her highlight last season was topping No. 53 Elise Wagle of UCLA, 6-4, 6-4 in singles play after teaming up with Alice Xu to score a victory over the Bruins' No. 30 A.C. Lutkemeyer/Ahmani Guichard in doubles action, 6-2.
Martinez played three seasons at Illinois, registering a 30-20 mark in singles action and a 40-28 mark in doubles play. The last two seasons she logged a 14-5 mark in Big Ten doubles action, including an 8-3 record in 2025. Martinez dealt with injuries early in her Illini career, including missing fall competition as a freshman and five weeks of the Big Ten season as a sophomore.
"I am incredibly excited to have signed with Texas A&M," Martinez said. "The program, the coaches and the team are ambitious and dedicated. I fell in love with Aggieland on my visit and can't wait for the fall. I am super grateful for the opportunity to represent this team and get closer to my goals for my senior year."
The Port Saint Lucie, Florida, product was a blue-chip recruit, ranked as high as No. 15 on tennisrecruiting.net in 2020. Among her amateur highlights were reaching the singles and doubles finals at the 2021 ITF J4 Netherlands and along with winning the singles championships at the 2019 ITF J5 Vale Del Lobo junior open and 2019 National Spring Championship.
