LUBBOCK – The Texas A&M track & field team downed two school records on the opening day of the Corky Classic, as Henry Zimmerman broke the men's weight throw all-time mark, while Lily Carlson followed suit in the women's pole vault, Friday at Texas Tech's Sport Performance Center.
The Aggies impressed in their first showing of the Spring season, as they won three event titles, landed 11 podium finishes and recorded five marks that ranked on the all-time performers list which included the two school records.
Zimmerman kickstarted the record-breaking day in the weight throw, as he planted his name at the top of the all-time list in his Maroon & White debut. The New Albany, Ohio, native recorded a toss of 21.88m/71-9.5 which secured him second in the event and first among collegiate competitors.
Adding to the school records was Carlson, as the freshman phenom cleared a staggering bar of 4.41m/14-5.5 to slingshot her name to the top of the record books in only her second collegiate meet. She passed Texas A&M all-time great vaulter Heather Abadie to capture the school record.
Lawson Jacobs took the momentum to the oval, setting the tone for Texas A&M's decorated 400m group. He crossed the line with a personal-best time of 45.37 which enters him in the Aggie record books at No. 7. The men also swept the remaining podium spots as Eric Hemphill III and Auhmad Robinson finished second (46.19) and third (46.61), respectively. On the women's side, Jahnile Registre logged a top-three result with a mark of 53.60, while Peace Nwaelehia was close behind in fifth (53.79).
Sofia Yakushina had a productive day in the field capturing the top spot in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.39m/20-11.75. Morgan Davis continued to climb up the record book in her second meet for the Aggies, after recording a mark of 6.33m/20-9.25 to move from No. 10 to No. 6 which helped her take second in the event.
The Texas A&M women's hurdlers and sprinters kicked off their Spring on the front foot, led by Jaiya Covington who placed second in the 60m hurdles final with a time of 8.13 and also ran a season-best mark of 8.06 in the semifinal. Yakushina recorded an impressive mark of her own of 8.37 which was good for sixth place in the final and was just shy of her career-best time. The 60m sprint group saw all five women advance to the semifinals, but it was Machaeda Linton and Aysha Shaheed who continued to the final and finished third (7.32) and fifth (7.35), respectively.
The 800m groups also captured a pair of podium finishes, as Tharushi Karunarathna clocked a time of 2:08.62 which was good for second place and debuted her at No. 11 on the all-time list. Stefon Dodoo added another impressive showing to his rookie campaign, also placing second in the men's contest with a time of 1:50.78.
