Davis Claims Long Jump Title on Opening Day of SEC Indoor Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M track & field's Morgan Davis won the women's long jump title on the opening day of the SEC Indoor Championships Thursday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
The women's long jump duo of Davis and Machaeda Linton highlighted day one of the conference championships, as they swept the top two spots on the podium and secured 18 points for the Maroon & White. Davis had a career day, leaping 6.57m/21-6.75 to ensure the gold medal. The junior's mark also moved her up to No. 3 on Texas A&M's all-time performers list. Linton matched her season best on the way to her silver medal, jumping 6.51m/21-4.25.
Adding to the point totals for both teams were the distance medley relay groups. The women claimed their third medal of the day, as the quartet of Sophia Bendet, Peace Nwaelehia, Tharushi Karunarathna and Debora Cherono crossed the line in a school-record time of 10:58.39 to earn six points for the team. On the men's side, Ondrej Gajdos, Musa Isah, Grant Ashby and Youssef Asslouj grabbed five points with a fourth-place result in 9:33.59, the mark also ranks 10th on the all-time performers list.
Michael Moiben got the men's team on the board after taking eighth in the 5,000m. The freshman ran a personal-best time of 13:45.17 which improved his mark at No. 2 in the Aggie record book. Jack Johnston and Victor Kibiego also climbed the all-time performers list now ranking third (13:47.40) and fourth (13:48.68), respectively.
The heptathlon duo of Blake Harris and Adam Averett had an outstanding opening day, ending the afternoon in first (3,365) and fourth (3,010), respectively. Harris kicked off his title defense from last year's championship on fire, winning the 60m (6.85) and long jump (7.50m/24-7.25). He followed that up with second in the shot put (13.69m/44-11) and rounded out day one also taking second in the high jump (1.98m/6-6). Averett in his Aggie debut secured third in the 60m (7.07), second in the long jump (6.98m/22-10.75), fourth in the shot put (12.52m/41-1) and fifth in the high jump (1.89m/6-2.25).
Camryn Dickson set the tone on the track, punching the Aggies' first ticket to finals in the women's 200m. She won the 11th heat of the event in 22.73 which was the third-fastest time of the prelims. Anya Jackson finished just shy of the final, finishing ninth in 22.99, the mark ranks 10th on the all-time performers list.
Auhmad Robinson booked his ticket to Saturday's men's 200m final, clocking a time of 20.55 to advance as the No. 4 overall qualifier. Blake Holland also ran a personal-best time in the event of 20.77 to take 12th.
Joyce Kemboi downed the first school record of the day, shattering the women's 5,000m all-time best by over nine seconds after recording a mark of 15:43.23 which was good for 11th overall in the event.
The women's pentathletes each recorded all-time performers list marks. Bradie Menegatti accumulated a total of 4,131 points to rank No. 6 in the record books, while Mercy Freeman secured 3,855 which stands at No. 11.
After the opening days action, the women's team are tied for second with 24 points, while the men rank ninth with six points.
