Texas A&M Battles Saint Mary’s in NCAA Tournament First Round
Mar 18, 2026 | Men's Basketball
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Texas A&M men's basketball team earned the No. 10 seed in the South Region and is set to begin NCAA Tournament action against No. 7 seed Saint Mary's Thursday at the Paycom Center. Tip is set for 6:35 p.m. on TruTV.
The Aggies make their fourth straight and 18th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance Thursday after notching their fifth consecutive 20-win season and a fourth-place finish in the SEC. They moved to 21-11 on the year after falling to Oklahoma in the second round of the SEC Tournament last week. In the third meeting of the season, the Sooners jumped out to an early lead and Texas A&M wasn't able to catch up. Rashaun Agee led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Rylan Griffen added 13 points of his own and Pop Isaacs chipped in 12.
Griffen closed out the regular season with back-to-back career games. He matched his career-high with 21 points to lead five players in double-figures in the 96-85 win over Kentucky at Reed Arena. He followed it up by filling out the stat sheet in the 94-91 triple overtime battle in Baton Rouge, posting career-bests with 24 points, five 3-pointers, seven rebounds, six steals and three blocks. On the year, Griffen's 1.6 steals per game have helped the Aggies rank second the league in forced turnovers (13.6) and third in steals (8.1). They land in the top-five among Power 4 teams in both categories.
Agee continues to dominate of both ends of the floor scoring 15-plus points in five of the last seven games and registering 16 double-digit rebounding games this season. He owns the Texas A&M record for double-doubles in a season after recording his 13th of the year against the Sooners in the SEC Tournament. Agee is also climbing the single-season rebounding list as his 284 on the year are good for fifth and he is just two boards away from moving into fourth. He closed league play averaging 16.1 points and 9.3 rebounds, which helped him earn All-SEC Third Team accolades. On the year, he ranks second among league players with 8.9 rebounds and 6.2 defensive boards per game.
The Aggies are No. 9 in the country in scoring offense with 88.7 points per game and sit in 15th knocking down 10.8 3-pointers per game. They rank second nationally and sit atop the conference scoring 35.6 bench points per game. Zach Clemence and Isaacs have helped lead the bench production throughout the year as Clemence registered three 20-point games in league play and has added 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds over the last five games, while Isaacs has been filling out the stat sheet, averaging 14.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals through the last four games.
Thursday marks the third all-time meeting between Texas A&M and Saint Mary's. The two teams previously played a home-and-home in the mid 90's with the Gaels notching an 80-68 victory on their home court in 1994 and the Aggies picking up an 83-55 win in College Station a year later. Saint Mary's is 25-7 on the season and claimed its fourth straight West Coast Conference regular season title, but fell to Santa Clara, 76-71, in the opening round of the conference tournament.
