Fourteen-year coaching veteran Jake Carlson is in his second year on the Aggies’ staff, serving as a volunteer assistant coach.
Carlson mentors the catchers as well as handling duties pertaining to on-campus recruiting and development of scouting reports.
In his first season in College Station, Carlson helped guide the Aggies to their first-ever SEC Tournament crown. The Maroon and White finished the season with a 49-16 mark, including a third-place finish in the SEC with a 20-10 league ledger. Texas A&M produced a school-record 13 MLB Draft selections in 2016.
Carlson arrived at Texas A&M after a three-year stint at Howard College. During the three years, he helped the Hawks to a combined 122-57 mark and a WJCAC title in 2015. He helped mentor nine draft picks, including three players picked in the first six rounds.
Carlson’s coaching career started at Nicholls State where he served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2004 and he was promoted to a full-time assistant in his second season. After his stint at Nicholls State, Carlson made stops at Coffeyville Community College (2005-07), Odessa College (2007-10) and Blinn College (2010-12). He also served as an associate scout with the Kansas City Royals for five years.
During his career on junior college staffs, over 60 players went on to play at Division I schools. He has coached 35 players that have been selected in the MLB Draft and three All-Americans.
The Manhattan, Kansas native, played his final two seasons of collegiate baseball at Nicholls State. In 2003, Carlson batted .286 (38-for-133) with four doubles, one home run and 20 RBI for the Colonels. He started his career at Butler County Community College, earning all-conference as an outfielder during his sophomore season.
Carlson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Nicholls State. He married the former Jessica Weynand of Brenham in December 2014.
