Devin Johnson enters his second year as the Aggies’ associate head coach in 2023-24 and his fifth season at Texas A&M.
A former student-assistant for head coach Buzz Williams at New Orleans, Johnson has served in a variety of roles on Williams’ staffs since 2011-12 at Marquette, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. With connections throughout the professional ranks, Johnson excels at designing workout programs to enhance player development, and he serves as the team’s liaison to the NBA, as well as academics.
Known for his strong recruiting skills and team defensive strategies, Johnson has played a key role in the Aggies’ success since his arrival in Aggieland. Texas A&M has won 25 games or more in back-to-back seasons for the second time in school history with 25 wins in 2022-23 following 27 victories from 2021-22. The 52 wins over the past two seasons matched the program’s top two-year win total.
Additionally, Texas A&M has reached the final of the SEC Tournament the past two seasons for the first time since joining the elite league in 2012-13. In 2022-23, the Aggies made their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in five seasons on the heels of the program’s first-ever appearance in the NIT Championship game.
Johnson came to Texas A&M in 2019 from Virginia Tech where he was elevated to assistant coach for the 2018-19 season after four seasons as the Director of Player Personnel. Johnson was instrumental in the Tech’s run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2018-19 as the Hokies ranked No. 2 in the ACC in defense (62.1 pts/G). During his time in Blacksburg, Johnson helped guide the Hokies to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history.
Prior to his arrival at Virginia Tech, Johnson spent two years at Marquette on Williams’s staff. He played a crucial role in community initiatives and summer camps in addition to supervising all of the program’s video needs, including staff scouting efforts and exchange procedures.
Before entering the collegiate ranks, Johnson worked for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets. During his five-year tenure, Johnson served as game presentation associate, group sales coordinator, and group service manager. Johnson interned for the New Orleans Hornets from 2005-2007.
Johnson was a member of Williams’ staff as an undergraduate assistant at UNO during the 2006-07 campaign. He was involved in game day activities associated with the program, as well as assisting with the team’s opponent scouting process and game plan development.
A 2008 graduate of the University of New Orleans, Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in business management and earned a minor in sport management.
