Isaac Chew
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Texas A&M men's basketball head coach Billy Kennedy announced the addition of Isaac Chew as an assistant coach.
Chew, who has been recognized by Fox Sports as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, brings an impressive resume of experience to Aggieland that features coaching stops at Virginia Tech (2014-16), Marquette (2012-14), Missouri (2011-12), Murray State (2007-11), Indian Hills Community College (2006-07) and Avila (2000-01, 2005-06). During his time at Murray he served under then Racers head coach Billy Kennedy.
"Bringing Isaac on board as a member of my staff is exciting," Kennedy commented "He knows me and what our program is all about and adds a lot of value in terms of coaching, recruiting and the development of our student-athletes. The experience and success he's enjoyed the last few years at Missouri, Marquette and Virginia Tech will be a great benefit to our team."
Most recently, Chew spent two seasons in Blacksburg, Va., under Buzz Williams whom he also worked for at Marquette, helping the Hokies' program progress by showing a nine-win improvement in 2015-16 that featured a 20-win campaign and a second-round showing in the NIT.
Joining forces with Williams in May of 2012 at Marquette, Chew helped the Golden Eagles claim the 2012-13 Big East Conference Championship as well as in drawing top talent by recruiting a heralded signing class, ranked as high as sixth nationally.
At Missouri in 2011-12, he helped lead Mizzou to a banner 30-win season that included a Big 12 Tournament title as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance. His biggest accomplishments, perhaps, reflect in the mentorship and player development of those chosen to play at the next level in the NBA. Chew worked meticulously with future professionals Marcus Denmon, Kim English and Phil Pressey in their days as Tigers.
"It feels like coming back home to family being able to join Coach Kennedy here at Texas A&M," Chew said. "I'm excited at the chance to work with him again and help this program build on its success. I look forward to helping bring another championship to Aggieland."
During his first stint coaching alongside Kennedy, Chew was a valuable entity with the Ohio Valley Conference Champions in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons at Murray State. His time in Kentucky included an unprecedented 31-win season, second round berth in the NCAA tournament, NIT appearance and cultivation of guard Isaiah Canaan, who now plays for the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers.
Chew served as an assistant coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, for the 2006-07 season. The Warriors advanced to the NJCAA National tournament for the first time in five years, and finished the regular season as the undefeated regional champs.
Overall, his proficiencies can account for four consecutive years of conference championships (Ohio Valley 2009-10 and 2010-11, Big 12 Tournament title 2011-12, Big East 2012-13) including an Elite Eight appearance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament with Marquette.
Born and raised proudly in the city of Chicago, Chew was a stand-out athlete at Wells High School. He played college basketball at Iowa Lakes Community College from 1994-1996 and finished his playing career at Avila University in Kansas City.
After earning his undergraduate degree at Avila and his MBA at Baker University, Chew returned to Avila to initiate his collegiate coaching career.
Chew and his wife, Patrice, have four children: daughters Deijah, Jada and Caasi, and son, Patrick.
