Before founding High & Inside and working with the Texas Bombers, Buchanan was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UTA during the 2019 season. In his lone season with the Mavericks the team defeated multiple top 25 teams including victories over Power 5 schools Arkansas, Baylor and Oklahoma State. Buchanan played an instrumental role in the development of the 2019 NCAA hits leader. As the outfield coach, he also saw two of his three fielders earn All-Sun Belt Team honors.
Prior to his time in Arlington, Buchanan was the head coach at Louisiana College in 2018 where he led a squad that finished fourth in the American Southwest Conference - its best finish in eight seasons, as well as featuring 10 on the all-conference list for a feat not achieved since 2010.
