Banks previously spent four seasons (1995-98) as the head strength coach at LSU. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as the head strength coach of the NFL’s Denver Broncos (1993-94). He served in the same role with the University of Wyoming in 1992 and was an assistant at the University of Colorado in 1990-91. The Buffaloes won the 1990 national football championship during his tenure. Banks was also an assistant at Stanford University from 1987-89 and at the University of Wyoming in 1986-87. He started his career as a graduate assistant at the University of Houston in 1985-86.
Banks is a four-time American Drug Free Powerlifting Association State Champion, winning titles in Wyoming (1987), California (1989, 1990) and in Texas (2000). He is a 1981 graduate of Texas A&M. Vern is married to the former Mary Wiebler of Laramie, Wyoming. They have two children—Vernon James (20) and Halle Kristine (17).
