Led by Marque Carrington's 3-point shooting and Bruce Jenkins' rebounding dominance, North Carolina A&T earned its first win of the year and won the battle of Aggies, defeating Texas A&M 94-77 Saturday night.
Carrington was 6-of-7 from 3-point range and A&T shot 60 percent from beyond the 3-point arch as a team. Overall, Carrington was 8 of 11 from the floor and scored a game-high 24 points. Five A&T Aggies scored in double digits.
The key difference in the game, however, was probably A&T's dominance of the boards. Jenkins grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, as A&T outrebounded A&M 43-27.
North Carolina A&T (1-2) broke open a close game with an 18-6 run midway through the second half. A&M closed to within five points of the lead several times in the final six minutes, but could get no closer.
A&M, playing its opening game of the season, wore black patches on its uniforms in honor of the 11 students and one former student who died as a result of the Nov. 18 bonfire collapse.
The A&M Aggies (0-1) played without their leading returning scorer from last year, Jerald Brown, who broke the orbit bone near his right eye during practice last Wednesday. Brown will miss at least one week because of the injury.
Freshman point guard Jamaal Gilchrist led A&M with 21 points in his college debut, while fellow freshman Bernard King and junior transfer Carlton Brown each added 12. Senior Aaron Jack scored 11.
