Aggie right-hander Lindsay Wilhelmson improved to 14-4 Sunday after no-hitting the Jayhawks in a 5-0 Aggie win. Wilhelmson struck out eight and allowed only four baserunners en route to the Aggies 30th win of the season. A&M is now 30-14 and 8-4 on the season. The no-hitter was Wilhelmson's first of her career and the third of the season for the team.
Jessica Slataper threw the first no-hitter on opening day against Stephen F. Austin and she threw a perfect game on March 26th against Sam Houston State. Sunday's no-hitter is the first that an Aggie pitcher has thrown away from the Aggie Softball Complex since Amy Vining accomplished the feat against Fordham in Clearwater, Florida on March 18, 2001.
Adrian Gregory got the Aggies their first run in the third inning when she took Kara Pierce's 0-1 pitch over the left field wall giving her five on the year and putting A&M up on 1-0.
A&M added two more runs in the fifth inning when sophomore Jana James hit a single up the middle scoring Selena Collins and Rocky Spencer and increasing the lead to three runs. Spencer reached base when she hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped by Ashley Frazer allowing Spencer to advance to second. Spencer then stole third as Collins was placed on first after drawing her league-leading 38th walk of the season. Collins advanced to second on Kristen Gunter's ground out to the shortstop setting the table for James to clear the bases.
A&M added two more runs in the sixth inning giving them a 5-0 lead. Wilhelmson led-off the inning when she drew her 12th walk of the season and was substituted with Junior Sherah Atkins who entered the game to pinch-run. Atkins immediately moved to second on a wild pitch and then advanced to third when Jennifer Davis hit a single to left field advancing to second as Frazer attempted to throw Atkins out at third. With no outs and two runners on center fielder Cheryl Fowler hit a double to the left field gap scoring Atkins and Davis. Fowler was stranded on the base path as Kansas retired the next three Aggie batters.
For the second day in a row A&M closed out the game by retiring the first three Jayhawks in the bottom of the seventh and securing the win.
Texas A&M returns home to take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a double header on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the second game immediately following the conclusion of the first.
