Jason Meyer struck out 11 hitters through seven innings and Austin Boggs belted a three-run homerun to lift No. 10 Texas A&M to a 5-2 win over Texas Tech before 7,472 fans at Olsen Field.
Meyer (5-0), making his first start of the season, allowed just three hits and one earned run in his time on the hill.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 22-5 overall and to 2-2 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech dropped to 16-8 and to 0-1 in league play.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Boggs, Cory Patton and Craig Stinson all singled to score the game's first run.
Texas A&M touched Texas Tech starting pitcher Dallas Braden for four runs in the bottom of the second. Andrew Baldwin led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Coby Mavroulis. After Braden struck out Justin Ruggiano, Erik Schindewolf's check-swing single moved Baldwin to third. Cliff Pennington singled to plate Baldwin before Boggs delivered a three-run homer - his third of the season - over the wall in left center to make the score 5-0.
Braden (1-2) settled in after the rough first two frames, pitching a scoreless third, fourth, fifth and sixth. John Milton and Tanner McElroy finished the game for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech finally got to Meyer in the sixth when Josh Brady followed a Michael Mask double with an RBI single to cut the A&M lead to 5-1.
Aggie freshman reliever Austin Creps came on to start the eighth inning and after allowing a one-out single, he enticed Mask to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Tech would add a run in the top of the ninth as Josh Brady tripled to lead off and Josh Haney lifted a sacrifice fly to rightfield to plate Brady. Ryan Andrews followed with a single. Andrews was called out for interfering with Schindewolf's opportunity to play a looping liner off of the bat of Matthew Coco and Madison Edwards struck out to end the game.
Game two of the series will be played on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
