Oklahoma State scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat No. 9 Texas A&M, 4-3, in front of 1,883 fans at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
After Aggie starting Jason Meyer allowed a leadoff double to Scott Kirby, he was replaced by closer Blake Rampy. Pinch hitter Justin Vineyard laid down a bunt which was fielded by Rampy in front of the mound. Rampy's attempt to gun down Kirby at third sailed past Austin Boggs and into foul territory, allowing Kirby to score and Vineyard to move to second.
OSU's next hitter, Chris Gutierrez, also laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Vineyard to third with one out in the inning. With the infield drawn in, Keanon Smith chopped a ball that Rampy deflected to second baseman Erik Schindewolf, allowing Vineyard to score the game-winner.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 25-7 overall and to 3-4 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys improved to 19-10 and to 2-2 in league action.
A&M took the early lead in the top of the first by scoring an unearned run off of Oklahoma State starting pitcher Thomas Cowley. Cliff Pennington and Boggs each singled with one out. Craig Stinson hit a groundball to short and Boggs was forced out at second. Second baseman Rusty Ryal's throw to first was wild and allowed Pennington to trot home.
Oklahoma State answered in the bottom of the first with a run of its own. Rod Allen led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rusty Ryal and stole third. Jason Jaramillo scored Allen with a groundout to third.
John Infante lifted a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the seventh to plate Mavroulis and give the Aggies a 2-1 lead. With one out, Mavroulis doubled down the line in right and advanced to third when Allen misplayed the ball in the corner. The run marked the second unearned run allowed by the Cowboy defense.
Cliff Pennington lifted the first pitch of the eighth over the wall in left to increase the A&M lead to 3-1. It was the fourth home run of the season for Pennington.
Allen doubled to start the eighth for OSU and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Fields to cut the A&M lead to one run.
Meyer lasted eight-plus innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on 10 hits. He struck out four and walked just one. Rampy (2-1) was tagged with the loss.
Thomas Cowley (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.
Game two of the series will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
