Cory Patton went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI to lead No. 9 Texas A&M past Kansas State, 11-4, before 3,940 fans at Olsen Field.
With the win the Aggies improved to 38-15 overall and to 13-10 in Big 12 play. The Wildcats dropped to 26-27 and 4-20.
Texas A&M concludes its 2004 regular season next weekend with a three game set against Texas. Game one will be on Friday, May 21, at Disch-Falk Field in Austin. Games two and three will shift to Olsen Field on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Kyle Nicholson (2-0) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He struck out three and did not walk a man.
The Aggies jumped on Kansas State starting pitcher Brett Bagley for three runs in the bottom of the first. After Erik Schindewolf walked and Austin Boggs was hit by a pitch, Patton deposited a Bagley offering over the wall in right to put the Aggies up 3-0. The longball was Patton's team-leading eighth of the season.
An RBI double by Schindewolf in the second extended A&M's lead to 4-0. Justin Ruggiano, who walked and stole second, scored on the two-bagger.
Patton walked and Coby Mavroulis doubled with one out in the third to chase Bagley from the game. Erik Rollins entered and fanned the first two men he faced to get out of the jam.
Bagley lasted 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits. He walked three, hit two batters and did not record a strikeout.
Josh Heinrich hit a two-out solo homer in the top of the fifth off A&M starter Kyle Marlatt to cut the lead to three runs. Prior to the home run, Marlatt had retired nine in a row.
The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the sixth with three runs. Terry Blunt started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a single by Ryan Saltzgarber. After a sacrifice bunt by Josh Dent moved the runners up a station, Doug Frame replaced Marlatt and allowed a RBI single and a walk. Kyle Nicholson replaced Frame and allowed back-to-back hits to score runs, but on each play a K-State runner was gunned down at the plate.
Marlatt pitched solidly in his 5.2 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on just three hits.
The Aggies responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, 7-4. Rollins walked Mavroulis and Craig Stinson to start the inning. After Andrew Baldwin fouled out, Ruggiano delivered a RBI single up the middle which scored Mavroulis. John Infante walked to load the bases and B.J. Kissel replaced Rollins on the mound. Schindewolf promptly singled to plate Stinson and Ruggiano and end the scoring for the inning. Schindewolf finished the game with three RBI.
Ruggiano stretched the A&M lead with a RBI single in the seventh and Bartek contributed with a two-RBI single in the eighth.
