Texas A&M third baseman Jamie Hinshaw as named the State Farm Player of the Game for hitting a three-run triple in the second but it wasn't enough as the No. 4 Texas A&M softball team (42-6, 13-4) fell, 5-4, to No. 19 Missouri (35-11, 8-7) in extra innings on Sunday.
"This is certainly a disappointing weekend for us," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "We hit the ball well but gave both games away late. You have to give credit to them (Missouri) for continuing to battle."
In the circle, Amanda Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas) threw the first five innings but did not figure in the decision after leaving with a two-run lead in the fifth. Jill Weynand (Frisco, Texas) threw three innings in relief and took the loss by giving up three runs.
In the first inning, Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) set a single season school record with her 48th stolen base when she nabbed home on a double steal with Jana James (Mesquite, Texas) moving to second.
In the second, Hinshaw's (Missouri City, Texas) bases-clearing triple to left center scored Joy Davis (Austin, Texas), Adrian Gregory (Livingston, Texas) and pinch hitter Nicole Robinson (Kingwood, Texas) giving Scarborough more than enough runs to work with.
Missouri battled back for the second day in a row as they pushed two across in the fifth and two in the seventh to take the game to extra innings before a Sarah Stringer knocked in the winning run on a double in the bottom of the eighth. Stringer's double was originally a home run but was ruled a double after Kendra Power, who was on first, stopped to celebrate in the third base line with Stringer forcing them to be called out.
The Aggies disappointing weekend leaves them two losses heavier in conference but did not affect their conference standings as they clinched the outright Big 12 regular season title on Saturday with losses by Oklahoma and Baylor.
The Big 12 Champion Aggies complete conference play on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. when they host No. 8 Baylor.
