Josh Stinson delivered a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 13th on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon to give Texas A&M a 4-3 win over Northwestern State before 4,236 bundled fans at Olsen Field.
Austin Boggs started the bottom of the 13th with a single to right and moved to second when Adam Hale reached on a fielding error. After a sacrifice bunt by John Infante, Jose Salazar was intentionally walked to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, Stinson ripped an offering from NSU reliever Daniel Clark into right to score the game winner.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 2-0 while the Demons dropped to 0-2. A&M will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
?We did a good job of finding a way to win the game,? first-year head coach Rob Childress said. ?We stayed in there and fought hard and our bullpen did an outstanding job - especially the guys that came in there with the game on the line. I can?™t say enough about how proud I am of this team.?
Redshirt freshman Evan Gerald (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate outing. Gerald tossed the final three extra frames and allowed just one hit and did not walk a man.
The Aggies had to overcome a two run eighth that gave NSU the lead, 3-2.
A lead walk to Ryan Hill in the ninth and a sacrifice bunt by Infante moved pinch runner Jason Meyer into scoring position. Consecutive wild pitches by Drew Brown allowed Meyer to trot home and tie the game at three.
Texas A&M freshman reliever Luke Anders bailed the Aggies out of a jam in the 10th. With runners on second and third and one out, Anders entered the game and needed just one pitch to coax Bobby Barbier to weakly ground out to end the inning.
The Aggies took the early lead with an unearned run off Demons starting pitcher Fraser Robinson in the bottom of the first. Brandon Glover reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. With one out, Glover stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Blake Stouffer.
NSU answered in the top of the second with a run off A&M starter Kyle Thebeau to tie the score at one. Durham started the inning with a triple to right and scored on Flower?™s one-out single through the left side.
The Aggies regained the lead in the bottom of the second by manufacturing a run. Spencer Jackson doubled to left and moved to third on a bunt single by Infante. After a strikeout, Craig Stinson perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt to score Jackson from third and make the score 2-1.
After Thebeau walked two hitters and hit another in the sixth, reliever Chance Corgan entered with the bases loaded and one out. Corgan fanned Michael Flower for the second out of the inning and with a full count and the runners moving, Michael Jaworski took a fastball at the knees to end the inning.
Thebeau, a true freshman, lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed one run on just two hits. He struck out seven, while walking three.
