Texas A&M had runners on second and third with one out in the ninth on Friday, but could not get them across as the Aggies dropped their Big 12 opener to Missouri, 3-1, before 4,172 fans at Olsen Field.
In the ninth, Parker Dalton led off with a single and John Infante walked. After a sacrifice bunt by Austin Boggs moved both runners into scoring position, Missouri closer Talyor Parker coaxed Craig Stinson fly out to shallow center and stuck out Ryan Hill to end the inning and record his nail down save of the year.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 14-7 overall and to 0-1 in Big 12 play. The Tigers improved to 11-7 and 1-0 in the league.
?They got the big hit when it counted,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We had chances in the eighth and ninth and we couldn?™t get the big hit. Jason Meyer and Jordan Chambless gave us a chance by putting goose eggs on the board and keeping us in the game.?
Meyer threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Chambless retired all four men he faced in the eighth and ninth ?- three by strikeout.
Tigers?™ starter Nathan Culp (5-1) was dominant, allowing just one unearned run in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a man. Including the runner who scored, he allowed only two runners to reach scoring position.
Missouri opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first off A&M starter Kyle Nicholson. Evan Frey singled to start the inning and moved to third on a single by Zane Taylor. Jacob Priday lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Frey.
The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the second to make the score 3-0. Brock Bond and Trevor Helms led off the frame with singles and moved up a station on a sacrifice bunt by J.C. Field. Bond scored on a groundout by Gary Arndt and Helms trotted home on the second straight single by Frey.
A&M scored its only run of the night in the bottom of the fourth. Dalton laced a double down the left field line, moved to third on a lineout to right by John Infante and scored when first baseman Derek Chambers dropped a throw on a routine groundball that would have ended the inning.
Nicholson (3-1) lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He fanned two and did not walk a man.
Dalton had two of the Aggies?™ five hits on the night and freshman Kyle Colligan recorded a single in his first game of the year.
The second game of the three-game set will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
