Anthony Vasquez pitched a season-high 5 2/3 innings in relief and allowed just one run on Saturday night, but Baylor made three first-innings runs enough to beat Texas A&M, 4-1, and even the three game series at Baylor Ballpark.
Vasquez came on in relief of starter Austin Creps with two outs in the first after Creps suffered a leg injury trying to field a groundball. The freshman lefty fanned four batters and walked just one.
?Anthony Vasquez went out there and competed and gave us a chance,? head coach Rob Childress. ?He allowed us to stay in the game and we hit a lot of balls hard and I was proud of the way we competed.?
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 20-22 overall and to 4-13 in Big 12 play. Baylor improved to 24-16 and 8-9.
The Bears touched Creps for three runs in the first inning before the injury chased him from the game. Beamer Weems walked and scored on a one-out double by Zach Dillon and Seth Fortenberry followed with a two-run homer to right.
The Aggies cut the Baylor lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth. Blake Stouffer led off the inning with a walk and with one out he moved to second when Austin Boggs tried to reach with a bunt. Spencer Jackson then delivered a two-out RBI single to right.
Weems led off the seventh with a double to right and moved to third on a deep flyball. Dillon, the first man reliever Jordan Chambless faced, chopped a single through the drawn-in A&M infield to make the score 4-1.
Creps (3-4) shouldered the loss. Baylor starter Cory VanAllen (5-4) lasted 6 1/3 and allowed one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Waco native Hart Hering retired all four men he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.
Nick Cassavechia pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.
The series finale will be played Sunday at Baylor Ballpark. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
