Jason Meyer carried a no-hitter in to the ninth inning on Friday night to lead Texas A&M past No. 15 Oklahoma, 3-1, before 6,023 fans at Olsen Field.
Meyer (1-0) tossed a complete-game one-hitter in just his third start of the season. After a lead walk in the ninth, Chuckie Caufield singled to left and Ryan Rohlinger later lifted a sacrifice fly to center to wreck Meyer?™s shutout attempt.
On the night, Meyer fanned six and walked three and retired 18 in a row from the third through the eighth innings in his first Friday-night start since April 22, 2005, against Kansas State.
?I thought Jason Meyer was outstanding tonight,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?It was exactly what we needed, especially against a good team like Oklahoma. We are at the point where every game we play is important and we have to keep fighting, scratching and clawing.?
Meyer was the beneficiary of five defensive gems that kept the no-hitter in tact. Two diving catches by center fielder Keith Stein, two more by right fielder Blake Stouffer and a diving play at second by Parker Dalton all brought the Olsen Field faithful to their feet.
?This is normally how Friday nights are in the Big 12,? Meyer said. ?We made so many big plays in the field and got big hits when we needed them. The biggest thing we had to do tonight was get the win and we were able to do that.?
With the win, the Aggies improved to 19-14 overall and to 3-7 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma dropped to 22-10 and 3-4.
OU starter Daniel McCutchen (4-5) was the tough-luck loser, allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete game. He struck out 13 and walked one.
A&M took the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. With one out, Stouffer singled up the middle and scored when Adam Hale torched a double off the wall in straight-away center. Jake Vasquez delivered a clutch two-out single to score Hale and make the score 2-0.
Former Sooner and current A&M catcher Josh Stinson chopped a two-out RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to give Meyer a three-run cushion.
Stouffer and Vasquez each had two hits on the night to pace the A&M attack.
Austin Boggs failed to record a hit to snap an 11-game hitting streak.
Game two of the three-game series will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
