Austin Creps threw 10-shutout innings and allowed just five hits on Saturday night, but Texas A&M managed only two hits as No. 15 Oklahoma defeated the Aggies, 1-0 in 11 innings, before 7,735 fans at Olsen Field.
The 10-inning outing was the longest of Crep?™s career as he also fanned a career-high 10 hitters. The junior right-hander retired the final 14 men he faced and struck out five of the last eight.
With the loss the Aggies dropped to 19-15 overall and to 3-8 in Big 12 play. The Sooners improved to 23-10 and 4-4. The rubber match of the three game series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
?That was a tough loss,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?There were two great pitchers going head-to-head out there tonight and neither one of them cracked. Austin Creps and Steven Guerra pitched their hearts out tonight.?
OU starter Guerra matched Creps inning for inning, allowing just one hit in his eight innings of work. He struck out five, walked only one and did not allow a runner to reach second base. Guerra retired the first 15 men he faced before a single through the right side by Josh Stinson led off the sixth.
Chance Corgan (3-2) shouldered the loss, allowing the only run of the game in the top of the 11th.
Chuckie Caufield?™s third single of the game came on a 0-2 count with one out in the inning. Caufield advanced to second when Corgan uncorked a wild pickoff throw. After Corgan struck out Aaron Reza for the second out of the inning, Kody Kaiser hit a sharp line drive which hit 10 feet in front of first baseman Jake Vasquez and took a bad hop over his head and into right field, allowing Caufield to score the game-winner.
Will Savage (4-2) tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to record the win.
The Aggies made a little noise in the bottom of the 11th but could not tie the game. Jose Salazar singled up the middle to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stinson. Savage then whiffed Keith Stein and got Ryan Hill to ground out to first to end the game.
