Kyle Nicholson allowed one earned run in eight-complete innings and Kyle Colligan extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a three-run home run on Saturday night to defeat Kansas State, 6-3, at Olsen Field.
?Kyle Nicholson was outstanding tonight and he made big-time pitches when he needed,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?Colligan had a great night tonight as well. He does not play scared, especially for a freshman.?
Nicholson (4-5) scattered eight hits, struck out two and walked two.
Colligan ended the night going 2-for-4 with the three-run dinger, a double, and two runs scored. His homer in the bottom of the sixth broke a 2-2 tie and put the Aggies on top for good. Colligan also drove in three runs in Friday?™s series opener. He has 15 RBI and is hitting .395 during his current hitting streak.
With the win, A&M improved to 25-27 overall and to 6-17 in Big 12 play. K-State dropped to 26-20-1 and 5-17-1. The Aggies will look for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
Texas A&M scored a pair of unearned runs off K-State starting pitcher Adam Cowart in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Hill legged out an infield single and moved to third on two errors on a grounder by Jose Salazar. Josh Stinson then drove in a run with a single and John Infante plated the other with a fielder?™s choice.
The Wildcats answered with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game. Eddie Vasquez singled and moved to third on a throwing error by Nicholson that allowed the hitter, Derek Bunker, to advance to second. Brandon Farr then singled up the middle, scoring both runners.
Kansas State cut the A&M lead to 5-3 with another unearned run in the top of the eighth, but Hill blasted a RBI double in the bottom of the inning to regain the Aggies?™ three-run cushion.
Anthony Vasquez retired the side in the ninth to record his second save of the year.
Cowart (5-7) suffered the loss, allowing five runs ?- three earned ?- on six hits.
