Jason Meyer threw seven innings and allowed two runs on just two hits, but Texas A&M stranded 11 runners as Kansas defeated the Aggies, 2-1, Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 25-28-1 and 6-18-1 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks improved to 36-23 and 11-14. The loss drops A&M out of contention for a spot in next week?™s Big 12 Championship.
The Jawhawks scored first in the bottom of the third as Texas A&M issued walks to Matt Baty, Ritchie Price, Gus Milner, and John Allman. Only one run was scored as KU left the bases loaded.
The Aggies seemed poised to respond in the top of the fourth when Jake Vasquez singled and Jose Salazar walked, but with two outs, Ryan Hill?™s line drive found the glove of the leaping third baseman Eric Morrison.
Kansas?™s first hit came in the bottom of the eighth, when Ryne Price hit a solo homerun over the right field wall to lead off the inning.
A two out double by Aggie third baseman Ryan Hill scored Jose Salazar from first to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the eighth.
Meyer took the loss and fell to 3-4 on the season.
Kansas starter Kodiak Quick (10-4) threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up five hits to record the win. Don Czyz picked up his 16th save of the season, tossing the final 2 1/3 innings for the Jayhawks.
